Tankless Vs Storage Water Heaters

Updated: Jan 19, 2021

Water heaters are an integral part of any home. Water heaters can be durable and can last over a decade when they’re properly maintained. If you’re looking to purchase a new water heater for your home, it’s important to first decide between a tankless heater or a storage tank heater.

Understanding The Tankless Water Heater

Tankless water heaters use a high-powered burner to quickly heat the water as it’s running through the heat exchanger and deliver it right to your home’s faucets, showers and baths without storing the water in a tank. These water heaters are often powered by electricity or gas and are found to be 22% more energy-efficient than gas-powered water heaters.

Tankless Water Heater: Advantages

Some of the advantages of a tankless water heater include the following:

  • Is a long term, cost-effective investment.

  • Longer use than storage tank heaters.

  • Tankless water heaters last anywhere from 10-30 years.

  • Does not consume as much space as storage tank water heaters.

  • Hot water is accessible at any point.

  • You do not have to wait for any amount of time for the water to become hot, even a few seconds as you would with a storage-tank water heater. Storage tank heaters also take far longer to heat the water overall because of the amount of water that has to be heated.

Understanding The Storage Tank Water Heater

Storage tank water heaters use a hot water tank to heat higher volumes of water. The storage tank water heater releases the hot water from the very top of the tank when you turn on your faucet, shower or bath. Then, hot water is replaced with cold water that enters the bottom of the storage tank to ensure it’s filled with water.

Storage Tank Heater: Advantages

Some of the advantages of a storage-tank water heater include the following:

  • The initial cost of a storage-tank water heater is far less expensive than the tankless water heater.

  • Storage tank water heaters have less complicated operations than tankless units, which results in less expensive repairs or maintenance requirements.

  • Installation is less expensive and time-consuming than tankless water heaters when completed by professional installers.

  • You do not have to worry about the storage water heater is “output challenged.”
