Choosing Better Lighting for Your Home

Lighting can make a world of difference in a home; however, the selection process is not as easy as it seems. Choosing the right lighting for different rooms can be complicated because of the overwhelming amount of options that are available. There are bright lights, dim lights, hanging lights, wall lights, chandeliers and LED lights, just to name a few.

Choosing the right lights can take a lot of time and effort but it’s very important that you take the process seriously so that you select the perfect lights that are suitable for the space you wish to brighten. The lights you choose must be functional, provide the right amount of illumination and add to the room’s aesthetic.

There are three types of lighting that you can choose from, including ambient lighting, task lighting and accent lighting. Ambient lighting is normally the primary source of light found in a room while task lighting is used to provide light for specific activities like reading a book or putting on makeup, for example. These lights cannot be used to brighten up an entire room and are intended for very small areas.

Accent lighting is often referred to as decorative lighting and consists of chandeliers, sconces and lamps. These lights are normally used to draw attention to something special like a painting or bookshelf and help your desired element to stand out. Knowing the type of lighting that the room requires will help you select the right one.

In order to select the right type of light, you will have to consider the room it will be placed in, so make sure you’re shopping for a specific space as each room has different lighting needs. Entryways, for example, work well with mounted chandeliers placed in the middle of the ceiling while a bedroom, on the other hand, needs warm lighting. Dimmers are great for living rooms and bedrooms because they allow you to control the lighting so you can choose to have it bright or dim, depending on the mood. Bathrooms need a lot of light and scones and bright LED lights are often best for this type of space. Placing them above the mirror in your bathroom is ideal.

Once you confirm the type of lighting you require, you will have to look at all of the different categories. This can be overwhelming, so take the time to familiarize yourself with the options that are available so that you can select a suitable light. You can choose between scones, pendants, chandeliers, lamps, flush mounts and semi-flush mounts, for example.
